We have been waiting for our insurance company (Tricare) to make the official approval for this major surgery my newborn needs on his noggin. We are in their
West region. San Antonio is in their South region. The doctor we were going to is the top in the nation with this particular surgery--he actually pioneered
it 10 years ago. He is a pediatric neurosurgeon and the surgery he developed is much less traumatic, less risk, less invasive and provides a significantly
better end result from the cosmetic standpoint. He has done this surgery and had it approved by other Tricare patients without a problem. We were certain
that there would be no problem for us to go there since we are paying our own travel expenses etc. This surgery also costs much less over all because the
hospital stay is 1/4 of what it would be with the traditional procedure. It really is a good deal for the insurance company to allow us to do it there.
We had made our travel plans and reservations--Thank you John John, and were all set to go there for surgery on the 5th of June. We were just informed that Tricare will only pay 50% if we go to San Antonio because it is considered out of network. That is 50% of tens of thousands of dollars. Not exactly pocket change we have laying around. So now we must have the surgery here in Colorado Springs and go with the full blown, complicated procedure. Makes me nervous and a bit angry. I certainly appreciate the fact that as a military family, we have full coverage at no cost to us. But I am upset that I am not able to choose what I feel is the best for my son when it comes to something like neurosurgery.
All that to say thanks to all who have written me to support me. And a special thanks to John John for all his leg work. Please pray for my little guy. He will have surgery here in Colorado Springs on the 10th of June. Again, anyone who is interested in the details, I am happy to share with you, but I didn't want to post since it might seem a bit too gory for general posting. Feel free to email me. hidye at earthlink dot net
